Getting started

Chapter 1 · Getting started

Prepare a ZTE C600 series OLT

This guide prepares a ZTE C600 series (C6xx Titan) OLT for SmartOLT. You give the OLT a management IP address, create a user for SmartOLT and enable Telnet. After these steps, you connect the OLT to SmartOLT.

The commands in this guide use these example values. Replace them with your own values.

Value Example
OLT management IP address 10.200.0.2
Netmask 255.255.255.0
OLT default gateway 10.200.0.1
OLT management VLAN ID (in-band only) 300
User for SmartOLT smartoltusr

1Connect to the OLT

A factory-new C600 has no factory IP address and usually no default account. So you make the first configuration over the serial console.

Use Ethernet (Telnet or SSH) only for a C600 that is already configured. It must have a reachable IP address, an existing account, and Telnet or SSH enabled.

Option 1: Over the serial console from a PC (PuTTY)

  1. Use the original ZTE serial cable from the C600 box. Connect it to the port labeled CON.
  2. If your PC has no serial port, use a USB-to-serial adapter.
  3. Find the COM port of the adapter in the Windows Device Manager (Windows+X), under Ports (COM & LPT).
  4. In PuTTY, select Serial and enter the COM port and the speed. Set the other values under Connection → Serial:
    • Speed: 115200
    • Data bits: 8
    • Parity: None
    • Stop bits: 1
    • Flow control: None
  5. Open the session and press Enter. If the OLT asks for a login, use its existing account. If the OLT has no account yet, stay on the serial console. You create the SmartOLT user in step 3.
Warning

The ZTE serial cable has a special pinout. Cisco and Huawei console cables do not work with the C600.

Option 2: Over the serial console through a MikroTik

Connect the serial console port of the MikroTik to the console port of the OLT with a compatible cable. Then open a MikroTik Terminal in WinBox or over SSH.

  1. Free the serial port of the MikroTik:

/system console disable [find where port=serial0]
  2. Open the serial session:

    /system serial-terminal serial0
  3. Press Ctrl+A, release the keys, then press R. The MikroTik detects the baud rate.

  4. Press Enter to reach the OLT console.

To close the serial session, press Ctrl+A, release the keys, then press Q. For more details, see the MikroTik serial terminal documentation.

Option 3: Over Ethernet (Telnet or SSH)

Use this option only when the OLT is already configured. A factory-new C600 needs the serial console.

  1. Use the network path on which the OLT is already reachable. This is the MGMT port if the IP address is configured there, or your existing in-band network. Do not change the cabling of an OLT that is already reachable.
  2. If you connect your PC directly to the OLT, give the PC a free IP address from the subnet of the OLT IP address.
  3. Check the connection. You must receive replies.

    ping [OLT IP address]
  4. To connect over Telnet, Telnet must be enabled on the OLT. In PuTTY, select Telnet and enter the OLT IP address. In a terminal, run:

    telnet [OLT IP address]
  5. To connect over SSH, the SSH server must be enabled on the OLT and the account must be allowed to log in over SSH. In PuTTY, enter the OLT IP address in Host Name (or IP address), select SSH and click Open. In a terminal (OpenSSH), run:

    ssh [username]@[OLT IP address]
  6. Log in with the existing account of the OLT.

Enter privileged mode

If the prompt ends with > instead of #, enter privileged mode. The default enable password is zxr10, unless someone changed it.

  1. Run:

    enable
  2. Enter the password zxr10. The prompt changes to ZXAN#.

    ZXAN>enable
    Password: zxr10
    ZXAN#
  3. Check the status of the cards:

    show card
    ZXAN# show card
Shelf Slot CfgType CardName Port HardVer Status
    ---------------------------------------------------
    1 1 GFGH GFGH 16 V1.0.0 INSERVICE
    1 2 GFGH GFGH 16 V1.0.0 INSERVICE
    1 3 FCSDA FCSDA 0 V1.0.0 INSERVICE
    1 4 SPUF 4 OFFLINE
    1 5 SPUF SPUF 4 V1.0.0 INSERVICE
    1 6 PRSF PRSF 0 V1.0.0 INSERVICE

2Configure the management IP address

The OLT gets its management IP address on one of two interfaces. Choose the option that matches your network.

Option 1: Out-of-band management port

The management port is labeled MGMT. It sits in the same port group as the CLK, ALM and CON ports. The MGMT port is an isolated port for management only and cannot carry customer traffic. It is also called the OOB (out-of-band) management port.

  1. Connect the MGMT port of the OLT to the router with a LAN cable.
  2. Set the IP address on the mgmt_eth interface:

    conf t
    interface mgmt_eth
    ip address 10.200.0.2 255.255.255.0
    exit
    exit
  3. If you connected over Ethernet with the old IP address, connect again on the new IP address 10.200.0.2.

  4. Add the default gateway and save the configuration:

    conf t
no ip route vrf mng 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
    ip route vrf mng 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.200.0.1
    exit
    write
    ZXAN# conf t
ZXAN(config)# no ip route vrf mng 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
    ZXAN(config)# ip route vrf mng 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.200.0.1
    ZXAN(config)# exit
    ZXAN# write
    Write DB OK!
    Building configuration...
    ....[OK].
    ZXAN#
  5. Check the routing table to confirm the default gateway:

show ip forwarding route vrf mng
ZXAN# show ip forwarding route vrf mng
Dest Gw Interface Owner Pri Metric
    *> 0.0.0.0/0 10.200.0.1 mgmt_eth Static 1 0
    *> 10.200.0.0/24 10.200.0.2 mgmt_eth Direct 0 0
    *> 10.200.0.2/32 10.200.0.2 mgmt_eth Address 0 0

Option 2: In-band VLAN interface

  1. Create the management VLAN and set the IP address on its interface:

    conf t
    vlan 300
    exit
    interface vlan300
    ip address 10.200.0.2 255.255.255.0
    exit
  2. Add the default gateway and save the configuration:

    conf t
    no ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
    ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.200.0.1
    exit
    write
  3. The VLAN must be tagged on the uplink that you use. Tag it on the uplink port:

    conf t
    interface xgei-1/10/1
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport vlan 300 tag
    exit

The uplink interface name depends on the port speed. Use xgei-1/10/1 for a 10G uplink and gei-1/10/1 for a 1G uplink.

  4. Check the routing table to confirm the default gateway:

    show ip forwarding route
    ZXAN# show ip forwarding route
Dest Gw Interface Owner Pri Metric
    *> 0.0.0.0/0 10.200.0.1 vlan300 Static 1 0
    *> 10.200.0.0/24 10.200.0.2 vlan300 Direct 0 0
    *> 10.200.0.2/32 10.200.0.2 vlan300 Address 0 0

3Create the SmartOLT user

SmartOLT connects to the OLT with this user and password. You create a local authentication template, a local authorization template and the user.

  1. Enter the configuration mode:

    conf t
  2. Create the local authentication template:

    aaa-authentication-template 2001
    aaa-authentication-type local
    exit
  3. Create the local authorization template:

    aaa-authorization-template 2001
    aaa-authorization-type local
    exit
  4. Bind the templates to the system user templates:

    system-user
    authorization-template 1
    bind aaa-authorization-template 2001
    local-privilege-level 15
    exit
    authentication-template 1
    bind aaa-authentication-template 2001
    exit
  5. Create the user. Replace [a strong generated password] with a strong password that you generate:

    user-name smartoltusr
    bind authentication-template 1
    bind authorization-template 1
    password [a strong generated password]
    exit

4Enable Telnet

  1. Enable the Telnet server and save the configuration:

    conf t
    line telnet server enable
    exit
    write

The OLT is now ready for SmartOLT.

Settings that SmartOLT configures

SmartOLT configures the settings below automatically. You do not need to run these commands. They set a daily automatic save of the configuration at 19:00 and the NTP servers.

conf t
auto-write everyday 19:00:00
no ntp enable
ntp server 216.239.35.4 priority 2 version 4 unlock
ntp server 162.159.200.123 priority 3 version 4 unlock
ntp poll-interval 10
ntp enable
