Chapter 1 · Getting started

Prepare a ZTE C300, C320, C350 or C220 OLT

This guide prepares a ZTE C300, C320, C350 or C220 OLT for SmartOLT. You connect to the OLT, give it a management IP address, create a user for SmartOLT and enable Telnet. After these steps, you connect the OLT to SmartOLT.

For the ZTE C6xx Titan series, such as the C600, C610, C620, C650 or C680, follow Prepare a ZTE C600 OLT.

The commands in this guide use these example values. Replace them with your own values:

Value Example
OLT management IP address 10.200.0.2
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway of the OLT 10.200.0.1
Management VLAN ID (in-band only) 300
Uplink interface (in-band only) xgei_1/10/1

1Connect to the OLT

You can connect to the OLT in one of two ways:

  • Over Ethernet (Telnet or SSH): a network cable to the management port of a factory-new OLT, or the network path to an OLT that you can already reach.
  • Over the serial console: the original serial cable to the CL1 or CLI port. Use it when the OLT has no account yet or when remote access does not work.

Option 1: Over Ethernet (Telnet or SSH)

The factory IP address of a ZTE C3xx OLT is 136.1.1.100. If the OLT is already configured, use its current IP address in the commands below.

  1. On a factory-new OLT, connect an Ethernet cable to the dedicated out-of-band management port. This port is labeled 10/100 or MNG and sits near the CL1 or DIAG port. It is for management only and cannot carry customer traffic. If you can already reach the OLT over your network, keep the existing cabling.
  2. If you connect directly to the factory IP address, configure 136.1.1.1/255.255.255.0 on your PC. You can also configure it on the MikroTik port that connects to the management port of the OLT.
  3. Check the connection. The OLT must answer the ping.

    ping 136.1.1.100
  4. Connect with PuTTY or from a terminal, over Telnet or SSH.

In PuTTY, select Telnet and enter the IP address of the OLT. From a terminal, run:

    telnet 136.1.1.100

It works only if the SSH server is enabled on the OLT and the account may log in over SSH. In PuTTY, enter the IP address of the OLT in Host Name (or IP address), select SSH and click Open. From a terminal (OpenSSH), run the command below. zte is the username.

    ssh zte@136.1.1.100
  5. Log in. On a factory-new OLT, the username is zte and the password is zte. On an OLT that is already configured, use its existing account.

    ************************************************
Welcome to ZXAN product C320 of ZTE Corporation
    ************************************************

    Username: zte
    Password: zte
    ZXAN>
Note

Recent C3xx OLTs can ship without any account. If you cannot log in with the default username and password, or if Telnet and SSH do not answer, use the serial console.

Option 2: Over the serial console from a PC

  1. Use the original ZTE serial cable, or a cable made with the original pinout. Connect it to the CL1 or CLI port of the OLT.
  2. If your PC has no serial port, use a USB-to-serial adapter.
  3. Find the COM port of the adapter in the Windows Device Manager (Windows+X), under Ports (COM & LPT).
  4. In PuTTY, select Serial and enter the COM port and the speed. The speed is 9600, 57600 or 115200, depending on the OLT model and the control board. If the console shows garbled text or nothing, try the next speed.
  5. Under Connection → Serial, set Data bits to 8, Parity to None, Stop bits to 1 and Flow control to None.
  6. Open the session and press Enter. If the OLT asks for a login, use its existing account. If the OLT has no account yet, stay on the serial console. You create the user for SmartOLT in step 5.

Option 3: Over the serial console through a MikroTik

Connect the RJ45 CONSOLE port of the MikroTik to the CL1/CLI port of the OLT with a standard straight-through RJ45 (1:1) patch cable. This is a serial connection, so use the dedicated console ports at both ends. We tested this connection with a MikroTik CCR2116 and a ZTE C3xx OLT.

  1. Open a terminal on the MikroTik, through WinBox or over SSH.
  2. Free the serial port and open the serial session:

/system console disable [find where port=serial0]
    /system serial-terminal serial0
  3. Press Ctrl+A, release the keys, then press R. The MikroTik detects the baud rate automatically.

  4. Press Enter to reach the OLT console.

To close the serial session, press Ctrl+A, release the keys, then press Q. For more details, see the MikroTik serial terminal documentation.

Enter privileged mode

You need privileged mode for all the next steps. If the prompt ends with > instead of #, enter privileged mode.

  1. Run:

    enable
  2. At the Password: prompt, enter the enable password. The default enable password is zxr10, unless someone changed it. The prompt changes to ZXAN#.

    ZXAN>enable
    Password: zxr10
    ZXAN#

2Enable board detection and add the chassis

Enable the plug-and-play detection of the OLT boards and add the chassis type. Run the commands for your model.

Option 1: C320

Enter configuration mode, enable the plug-and-play detection of the boards, then add the rack and the shelf:

conf t
set-pnp enable
add-rack rackno 1 racktype C320Rack
add-shelf rackno 1 shelfno 1 shelftype C320_SHELF

Option 2: C300

Enter configuration mode, enable the plug-and-play detection of the boards, then add the rack and the shelf:

conf t
set-pnp enable
add-rack rackno 1 racktype IEC19
add-shelf rackno 1 shelfno 1 shelftype IEC_SHELF

Check the cards

Check the status of the cards:

show card
ZXAN# show card

1 1 20 HUTQ HUTQ 4 V1.0.0 V2.1.0 INSERVICE

The Status column shows INSERVICE for each installed card. An empty slot shows OFFLINE.

3Set the management IP address

SmartOLT reaches the OLT at its management IP address. Set it on the out-of-band management port (mng1) or on an in-band VLAN interface.

Option 1: Out-of-band management port

Enter configuration mode, open the management interface, then set the management IP address and the netmask:

conf t
interface mng1
ip address 10.200.0.2 255.255.255.0
Note

If you connected over Ethernet to the old IP address, connect again to the new IP address, 10.200.0.2 in this example.

Option 2: In-band VLAN interface

These commands enable the uplink, tag the management VLAN on it and assign the management IP address. The VLAN ID must be from 1 to 4094. Use the exact uplink name that your OLT shows, for example xgei_1/10/1 (10G) or gei_1/10/1 (1G). The slot and the port depend on your model.

conf t
vlan 300
exit
interface xgei_1/10/1
no shutdown
switchport mode trunk
switchport vlan 300 tag
exit
interface vlan300
ip address 10.200.0.2 255.255.255.0
exit
exit

On the router or switch port that connects to the uplink, allow the same management VLAN as tagged.

4Add the default gateway

  1. Replace the old default route with a route through your gateway, then save the configuration:

    conf t
    no ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
    ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.200.0.1
    exit
    write
  2. Check the routing table:

    show ip route

The route with Dest 0.0.0.0 must show your gateway, 10.200.0.1 in this example. Its Interface is mng1 for the out-of-band management port, or vlan300 for the in-band VLAN interface.

    Out-of-band management port:

    ZXAN# show ip route
Dest Mask Gw Interface Owner Pri Metric
    0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.200.0.1 mng1 static 1 0
    10.200.0.0 255.255.255.0 10.200.0.2 mng1 direct 0 0
    10.200.0.2 255.255.255.255 10.200.0.2 mng1 address 0 0

    In-band VLAN interface:

    ZXAN# show ip route
Dest Mask Gw Interface Owner Pri Metric
    0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.200.0.1 vlan300 static 1 0
    10.200.0.0 255.255.255.0 10.200.0.2 vlan300 direct 0 0
    10.200.0.2 255.255.255.255 10.200.0.2 vlan300 address 0 0

5Create a user for SmartOLT

SmartOLT logs in to the OLT with this username and password.

Enter configuration mode and create the user. Replace YOUR_PASSWORD with a strong password.

conf t
username smartoltusr password YOUR_PASSWORD max-sessions 16 privilege 15
Note

Use letters, digits and only these symbols in the password: ~ % ^ _ - + = . Other symbols, such as @, #, ? or [, can break the SmartOLT login on the OLT.

6Enable Telnet

The Telnet service is usually disabled at the factory. SmartOLT needs it to connect to the OLT.

Turn off the SSH-only mode, so that the OLT also accepts Telnet, then save the configuration:

conf t
no ssh server only
exit
write

Other settings

SmartOLT configures these settings automatically. You do not need to run these commands. They are here only for reference.

These commands save the configuration automatically every day at 18:00 and set the SNMP interface table to version 2. Then they stop NTP, add the NTP servers, set the poll interval, remove the alarm threshold and start NTP again:

conf t
auto-write enable
auto-write 18:00:00 everyday
mib-compatibility iftable v2
no ntp enable
no ntp client
ntp server 216.239.35.4 priority 2 version 4
ntp server 162.159.200.123 priority 3 version 4
ntp poll-interval 10
no ntp alarm-threshold
ntp client
ntp enable

Next steps

The OLT is now ready for SmartOLT. Next, connect the OLT to SmartOLT, as in Getting started. Then go to Settings → OLTs → Add OLT, fill in the fields, click Test connection and then Save. For the details of each field, see Add an OLT and check its status.
