Getting started

Chapter 1 · Getting started

Prepare a Huawei OLT

This page prepares a Huawei OLT of any series for SmartOLT. You connect to the OLT, confirm its boards, set a management IP address, create a user for SmartOLT and enable Telnet and SNMP. After these steps, you connect the OLT to SmartOLT.

The commands use these example values. Replace them with your own values:

Value Example
Factory IP address of the OLT 10.11.104.2
Address for your PC on the factory network 10.11.104.1/255.255.255.0
New management IP address of the OLT 10.200.0.2
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 10.200.0.1
Management VLAN (in-band only) 300
User for SmartOLT smartoltusr

The OLT prompt shows the model of the OLT. The examples use MA5608T.

1Connect to the OLT

You can connect over Ethernet with Telnet or SSH, or over the serial console. Use Ethernet for a factory-new OLT on its management port, or for an OLT that you already reach over your network. Use the serial console when the OLT has no network setup.

Option 1: Over Ethernet (Telnet or SSH)

  1. On a factory-new OLT, connect an Ethernet cable to the dedicated (out-of-band) management port. The port has the label ETH, and the OLT software calls it meth0. This port carries only management traffic, not customer traffic. If you already reach the OLT over your network, keep the existing cabling.
  2. When you connect directly to the factory IP address, configure 10.11.104.1/255.255.255.0 on your PC. You can also configure it on the MikroTik port that connects to the management port of the OLT. The factory IP address of a Huawei OLT is 10.11.104.2. On an OLT that is already configured, use its current IP address.
  3. Check the connection. The OLT must reply:

    ping 10.11.104.2
  4. Connect with PuTTY or from a terminal, over Telnet or SSH. To use Telnet, select Telnet in PuTTY and enter the IP address of the OLT. From a terminal, run:

    telnet 10.11.104.2
  5. To use SSH instead, enter the IP address of the OLT in Host Name (or IP address) in PuTTY, select SSH and click Open. From a terminal (OpenSSH), run:

    ssh root@10.11.104.2

It works only if the SSH server is enabled on the OLT and the account may log in over SSH.

  6. Log in. On a factory-new OLT, the user is root and the password is admin. On firmware R017 and newer, the password of root is admin123. On an OLT that is already configured, use its existing account.

    >>User name:root
    >>User password:
    MA5608T>

Option 2: Over the serial console from a PC (PuTTY)

  1. Connect a console cable with the correct pinout to the serial console port of the OLT.
  2. If your PC has no serial port, use a USB-to-serial adapter.
  3. Find the COM port of the adapter in the Windows Device Manager (Windows+X), under Ports (COM & LPT).
  4. In PuTTY, select Serial, then enter the COM port and the speed. Under Connection → Serial, set these values:
    • Speed: 9600
    • Data bits: 8
    • Parity: None
    • Stop bits: 1
    • Flow control: None
  5. Open the session and press Enter.
  6. Log in. On a factory-new OLT, the user is root and the password is admin. On firmware R017 and newer, the password is admin123. On an OLT that is already configured, use its existing account.

Option 3: Over the serial console through a MikroTik

Connect the serial console port of the MikroTik to the console port of the OLT. The cable must match the pinout of both serial ports. An RJ45 connector alone does not make a cable compatible. Open a MikroTik terminal through WinBox or over SSH.

  1. Free the serial port and open the serial session:

/system console disable [find where port=serial0]
    /system serial-terminal serial0
  2. Press Ctrl+A, release the keys, then press R. The MikroTik detects the baud rate.

  3. Press Enter to reach the OLT console.
  4. Log in with the same user and password as above.

To close the serial session, press Ctrl+A, release the keys, then press Q. For more details, see the MikroTik serial terminal documentation.

2Enter privileged mode

If the prompt ends with >, run:

enable
MA5608T> enable
MA5608T#

3Confirm the OLT boards

  1. Enter config mode and show the boards of the OLT:

    config
    display board 0
  2. Confirm each board in the Auto_find status, for example:

    board confirm 0/0
    board confirm 0/1
    board confirm 0/2

Repeat the command for every board in Auto_find.

  3. Show the boards again:

    display board 0

The boards now show the Normal or Active_normal status.

The next steps also run in config mode. If you log in again, run enable and then config first.

4Set the management IP address

SmartOLT reaches the OLT at its management IP address. Set it on the out-of-band management port or on an in-band VLAN interface.

Option 1: Out-of-band management port

  1. Open the meth0 interface and set the IP address and the netmask:

    interface meth0
    ip address 10.200.0.2 255.255.255.0
Note

If you connected over Ethernet on the old IP address, the session stops. Connect again on the new IP address 10.200.0.2.

Option 2: In-band VLAN interface

  1. Open the VLAN interface of the management VLAN and set the IP address and the netmask:

    interface vlanif 300
    ip address 10.200.0.2 255.255.255.0
  2. Tag the VLAN on the uplink that you use. Huawei has no xgei or gei names. You address the uplink by frame/slot and port, for example:

    port vlan 300 0/19 0

5Add the default gateway and save

Note

The default gateway 10.200.0.1 must already exist on your router.

  1. Enter config mode, remove the old default route, add the default route through your gateway and save the configuration:

    enable
    config
    undo ip route-static 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
    ip route-static 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.200.0.1
    save
  2. Press Enter again. The OLT saves both the data and the configuration.

6Create a user for SmartOLT

SmartOLT connects to the OLT with this user. Start the user wizard:

terminal user name
MA5608T(config)# terminal user name
  User Name(length<6,15>): smartoltusr
User Password(length<6,15>): (insert a strong password here)
  Confirm Password(length<6,15>): (confirm the password)
User profile name(<=15 chars)[root]: (press ENTER)
  User's Level:

Permitted Reenter Number(0--20) 20
User's Appended Info(<=30 chars) Press Enter, or type a comment such as SmartOltUser
Repeat this operation? (y/n)[n] n

For safety, also change the password of root:

terminal user password
MA5608T(config)# terminal user password
  User Name(<=15 chars): root
New Password(length<6,15>): (insert a strong password here)
  Confirm Password(length<6,15>): (confirm the password)
  Information takes effect
  Repeat this operation? (y/n)[n]: n

Answer the questions of the OLT:

The OLT asks Your answer
User Name(<=15 chars) root
New Password(length<6,15>) A strong password
Confirm Password(length<6,15>) The same password
Repeat this operation? (y/n)[n] n

7Enable Telnet and SNMP

Some firmware versions need these commands.

  1. Enable the Telnet and SNMP services:

    sysman service telnet enable
    sysman service snmp enable
  2. Make sure that no firewall blocks the two services:

    sysman firewall telnet disable
    sysman firewall snmp disable
  3. On Huawei R019 and later versions, bind Telnet and SNMP to all interfaces:

    sysman server source telnet any-interface
    sysman server source snmp any-interface

Settings that SmartOLT configures for you

SmartOLT sets the automatic save and the NTP servers of the OLT, so you do not need to run these commands. If you manage the OLT without SmartOLT, run them in config mode:

autosave interval 1442
autosave type all
autosave interval configuration 480
autosave interval on
ntp-service unicast-server 216.239.35.4 version 4
ntp-service unicast-server 162.159.200.123 version 4

Next steps

The OLT is now ready for SmartOLT. Next, connect the OLT to SmartOLT, as in Getting started. Then go to Settings → OLTs → Add OLT, fill in the fields, click Test connection and then Save.
